How did this church get started?

(Pastor) Michael & Teresa Klassen, were invited by the Mennonite Brethren Board of Church Extension to plant a new church on the Westside in 1997.  They began to meet in rented facilities in October of that year. Some years later, when rental costs surpassed a potential mortgage payment the church felt it was time to purchase property and a building. An opportunity presented itself for the church to purchase the Old Butterfly World Building on the corner of Westlake and Stevens which they renovated and moved into in 2002. SunRidge is now 9 years old.

Is SunRidge a part of a denomination?

SunRidge Community Church is affiliated with the Mennonite Brethren Conference of North America.  For information on our affiliation, go to:

SunRidge is also connected with Willow Creek Community Church ( www.willowcreek.org ) through the Willow Creek Association of churches.  Since 1992, the Willow Creek Association has been linking like-minded, action-oriented churches with each other and with strategic vision, training, and resources. The WCA works to equip Member Churches and others with the tools needed to build prevailing churches everywhere in the world.

What is SunRidge's membership process?

When the church is filled with diverse people who have

• a common understanding about their faith
• common growth goals around the most important things
• and a common vision

then unity becomes community and we are able to fulfill the Great Commission* and the Great Commandment* as Christ called us to.

The commitment to working shoulder to shoulder, saying, "We are on the same page, and we are committed to growing together" is what we call "membership."

Several times a year we offer the Growing Together/Membership seminar (Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m.)
This course draws our attention to

• The foundations of our faith
• The 5 main areas we want to grow together in
• And the mission of SunRidge Community Church

Those who attend have the opportunity to interact around the course material and may choose to take the next step in formalizing their commitment to membership in this local church.
