Welcome here! This blog is an “extra blog” being posted daily between January 13 and February 3 to come alongside the 21 Days of Prayer. We are reading the book of John with the intention of looking at Jesus very closely. We want to know Him really well so that we will love Him even more!
January 16, 2019
Good morning Jesus. As I sit down this morning, I pray I wouldn’t just skim over John 3 but would be able to see You and hear You about something specifically.
I am reading about Nicodemus, this educated and respected man who comes at night, hoping for a quiet and unseen conversation with You and without the paparazzi. He begins with a nice and respectful greeting to which You could have responded in kind: “I know about you also, Nicodemus. You are a Pharisee and a high ranking member of the council…” You could have talked about his achievements. You could have said some polite things. But You made an abrupt left-hand-turn in the conversation, pulling back the formalities, going straight to the heart of what He would most need to know from You: “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again…” and on from there.
When I look at the “flow” -- what he said and then what You said -- it makes me go, “Huh?” Why did you say that? The way You see people…who can predict what You will say?
Maybe you saw the list of questions Nicodemus had on his mind. Perhaps it was a checklist of conditions by which a person might achieve being included in the Kingdom of God. You could have wasted the whole night going through all that, since You already knew what He needed to hear:
“You must be born again. Nicodemus: you, my friend must be born again. Here is why being born again is my Grace-filled requirement, because it is I who have loved the whole world enough to satisfy everything else, all the conditions, for you.”
Nicodemus who tip-toed to the house at night also gets to hear Jesus say, “Men love the dark (notice how you came in the dark?), but Nicodemus the light of the world has come, and you are sitting with Him.”
As I am reading this chapter over again, I am struck by how all of this and more was said to Nicodemus, including one of the most famous verses in the world: John 3:16. To this limited audience You, Jesus, unfolded everything the whole world needed to know about your love. You gave all this to Nicodemus that night.
*** I didn’t expect this to speak to me like this, but what I am hearing is that You speak to me this way also. I too am just a little ’fraidy cat in so many ways, up half the night, turning over things in my mind and I, like Nicodemus, am a person who should know better. But Jesus, you interacted with his seeking and just as You offered up amazing words to Nicodemus, You unfold the wonders of your love to me too…little me.
You could have said to Nicodemus, “Nice to meet you, come on out to the shoreline tomorrow. I will take your questions there when more people will benefit from what I am about to say…” And why wouldn’t You have? This chapter is jam packed with amazing truth about Your love that is worthy of a larger audience, memorable things! As it turns out, what You said didn’t stay within the walls of that meeting.
As I read this, I am see what You are like Jesus. I see that You will speak clarifying truth when I come to You, and You won’t hold back. You will speak to me personally all the time, patiently, clearly, and intentionally. You will even do it at night if that is when I arrive on your doorstep.
I have wasted many opportunities for this kind of encounter. Spirit of GOD, I want to be more and more obedient, running to You to hear Your Words of life — this is what truly changes me and makes me come alive! Thanks for showing me this side of Jesus. Stick this Truth to me so I really, really get it.
